'Hobart Chargers Club History' by Sue Leedham and Cameron Whiteley The ABA is the largest interstate sporting competition of any code existing in the Southern Hemisphere with a total of 126 teams competing all over Australia. The Hobart Chargers compete in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) branch of the ABA. Since the demise of the Hobart Tassie Devils NBL team, the Chargers have taken on the role of the premier basketball side situated in Hobart. They were National Champions in season 2000 and 2002. The team has a varied make up, with a good mix of youth and experience. It has been Hobart’s aim to develop the junior talent available and provide every opportunity for these young players to be exposed to such a high level of basketball. The junior development program is extensive and involves specialist coaching and training routines for many of Hobart’s brightest young stars. The aim for all involved is to get the maximum results from the best of the ability available. This for Hobart, is another National Title. Under new coach Dan Krebs, the Chargers took all before them in season 2008, recovering from a disastrous season start, then coming from third place to win four consecutive finals to win the SEABL Championship. They then beat Melbourne in the National Semi-Final before narrowly losing the National Final by four points to the Rockhampton Rockets. |
